Margaret River bushfires

25 November, 2011 by Debbie Brace

My heart goes out to the people of Prevelly, Gnarabup, Margaret River and the surrounding area – those who have lost property and homes, and the entire community, all of whom will be dealing with the after-effects of this long after the media attention and nation-wide concern has passed. It’s just devastating.

As my blog followers will know, I’m a regular visitor to the Capes region, particularly the Cape to Cape track, and in fact walked Kilcarnup just two weeks ago. On Wednesday of this week, that entire section of the track burnt out. Luckily for us, we had decided to walk a section to the north of Ellensbrook this week but we saw the fire and knew something was terribly wrong. It wasn’t until we got back into phone range that we knew just how bad things had really got.

We take our hats off to all the people involved in bringing the fire under control; it’s impossible to even imagine what these past few days have been like for you.

We continue to walk north but none of us can help constantly looking back with heavy hearts to the fire ... Taken at 11.28am

Margaret RIver bushfire, Nov 2011

Taken at 12.22pm. By this time, even from our safe ~9kms away, we could see the orange glow in the heart of the fire. It was almost surreal to see fire across the ocean like this, and heartbreaking too - so much water, so close...
