Earth Hour for 2013 is fast approaching and it’s time for you to decide whether you will accept the challenge.

For those of you who don’t know, Earth Hour is where hundreds of millions of people across the globe turn off their lights on the same night for just a single hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. It is not, nor does it claim to be, an energy/carbon reduction event, rather it is a symbolic action that shows a commitment to creating a more sustainable planet. Earth Hour has become the single largest symbolic mass participation event and the largest global movement for the environment in the world.

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney Australia. In this event 2.2 million Sydney residents and 2100 businesses participated by turning off all non-essential lighting for just one hour. The intention for the following year was to make Earth Hour a national event in Australia; however, it very quickly became an international event.

Last year more than 7001 cities, in more than 152 countries and territories, across all 7 continents of the world, participated and showed their support and commitment for action against climate change and towards making a more sustainable planet.

This year, Earth Hour will be held on the 23rd of March at 8.30 pm and will go until 9.30 pm local time. If you’d like to participate all you have to do is turn your lights off for one hour at 8.30 pm on March 23rd. You can sign up to the event at http://earthhour.org/signup; but you do not have to sign up to participate.
